A Simple Guide to the Singapore Baby Bonus (2026)

JUMP TO:

Congratulations! Here’s A Good To Know For Every New Parent

Bringing a baby into the world is exciting, emotional and, if we’re being honest, a little overwhelming. Between choosing a stroller, preparing the nursery and figuring out how little sleep you are about to get, it’s easy to feel lost when someone starts explaining government schemes filled with acronyms and unfamiliar terms: Baby Bonus, CDA, CSA, MediSave Grant, LifeSG.

The good news is that Singapore has one of the most comprehensive support schemes for families. While it may seem complicated at first glance, it becomes much easier to understand once you break it down into a few simple parts.

This guide explains what each benefit is, how much support you may receive and how to make the most of it.

What Is the Baby Bonus?

The Baby Bonus Scheme is the Singapore Government’s way of helping parents with some of the costs of raising a child.

Instead of one large payment, the support comes in several forms:

  • A Baby Bonus Cash Gift paid over several years.
  • A Child Development Account (CDA) with government grants and matching contributions.
  • A MediSave Grant for Newborns to help with healthcare expenses.
  • Other family support initiatives, such as LifeSG credits, when announced.

Together, these benefits can provide substantial financial support during your child’s early years.

At a Glance: How Much Support Can You Receive?

The amount of support depends on your child’s birth order. Families welcoming a third or subsequent child generally receive higher grants and matching contributions than first-time parents.

Birth OrderBaby Bonus Cash GiftCDA First Step GrantMax Government Co-Matching CapTotal Government Value
1st Child$11,000$5,000$4,000$20,000
2nd Child$11,000$5,000$7,000$23,000
3rd Child$13,000$10,000$9,000$32,000
4th Child$13,000$10,000$9,000$32,000
5th + Child$13,000$10,000$15,000$38,000

Understanding the Baby Bonus Cash Gift

Many first-time parents assume they will receive the entire Baby Bonus in one lump sum. However, that is not how the scheme works. Instead, the Government releases the Baby Bonus Cash Gift in stages throughout your child’s first six and a half years.

Spreading the payments over several years helps families manage everyday expenses as their little one grows. From nappies and infant care to preschool fees and medical appointments, the cash support arrives at different milestones when parents are likely to need it most.

Here’s a quick look at the payout schedule:

  • At birth registration: S$3,000 (first and second child) or S$4,000 (third child onwards), usually within 7–10 working days.
  • At 6 months: S$1,500 (first and second child) or S$2,000 (third child onwards).
  • At 12 months: S$1,500 (first and second child) or S$2,000 (third child onwards).
  • At 18 months: S$3,000 (first and second child) or S$5,000 (third child onwards).
  • From age 2 to 6½ years: S$400 every six months until the final payout.

Although the payments are staggered, they are designed to support your child’s changing needs during the early years, giving parents a little extra breathing room along the way.

What Is the Child Development Account (CDA)?

While the Baby Bonus Cash Gift provides direct financial support, the Child Development Account (CDA) works a little differently.

Think of it as a dedicated savings account created especially for your child. Rather than functioning like a regular bank account, the CDA encourages parents to set aside money for future child-related expenses while receiving additional support from the Government.

One of the biggest advantages is that your savings can grow much faster thanks to government grants and dollar-for-dollar matching contributions.

The First Step Grant

Once your child’s CDA has been opened and activated, the Government automatically credits the First Step Grant into the account.

Even better, you don’t have to deposit any of your own money to receive this initial grant. From the very beginning, your child starts with a financial boost that can be used at approved institutions for eligible education and healthcare expenses.

Government Dollar-for-Dollar Matching

This is where many parents can maximise the scheme.

Every dollar you save into your child’s CDA is matched dollar-for-dollar by the Government until you reach the maximum matching cap for your child’s birth order.

For example:

If you’re eligible for a S$4,000 matching cap and deposit S$4,000 into the CDA, the Government contributes another S$4,000.

Your child’s savings grow much faster without requiring additional investment returns.

What Can You Actually Use CDA Money For?

This is probably the question most parents ask. Fortunately, CDA funds can be used for many everyday child-related expenses.

These include:

  • Childcare and infant care fees
  • Preschool fees
  • Medical consultations
  • Vaccinations
  • Hospital bills
  • Optical services
  • Approved healthcare insurance
  • Early intervention programmes
  • Selected pharmacies and healthcare retailers

A practical tip:

Before making payment, check whether the provider is a Baby Bonus Approved Institution (AI), as only participating merchants can accept CDA payments.

Don’t Overlook These Additional Benefits

Many parents focus only on the Baby Bonus Cash Gift without realising their newborn may also qualify for additional support.

MediSave Grant for Newborns

Every Singapore Citizen newborn receives a MediSave Grant credited directly into their CPF MediSave Account. Parents often use this to help offset healthcare costs, including vaccinations, hospitalisation and MediShield Life premiums.

LifeSG Benefits

From time to time, the Government also provides eligible families with LifeSG credits or other support measures. These initiatives may change from year to year, so it’s worth checking the latest announcements through the LifeSG app.

How to Apply for the Baby Bonus Without the Stress

If you are expecting your first child, the application process can seem like yet another task on an already long to-do list. Between packing your hospital bag, attending antenatal appointments and wondering whether you’ve remembered everything for your baby’s arrival, it’s easy to worry that you’ll miss an important step.

The good news is that applying for the Baby Bonus is far more straightforward than many parents expect. In fact, you can begin preparing your application up to eight weeks before your estimated delivery date, giving you one less thing to think about once your little one arrives.

When you are ready, simply log in to the official LifeSG Birth Registration Portal using your Singpass. During the process, you will be able to complete both your baby’s birth registration and your Baby Bonus application at the same time, making it much more convenient than handling them separately.

As part of the application, you will also be asked to choose a participating bank: DBS/POSB, OCBC or UOB, where your child’s Child Development Account (CDA) and Child Savings Account (CSA) will be opened.

Once your baby’s birth has been officially registered and your application has been processed, the first Baby Bonus Cash Gift is typically credited within seven to ten working days, allowing you to focus on settling into life with your newest family member instead of worrying about paperwork.

A Quick Overview of the Application Process

  1. Prepare early. You can start the Baby Bonus application up to eight weeks before your expected delivery date.
  2. Log in with Singpass. Visit the LifeSG Birth Registration Portal to begin your application.
  3. Complete both applications together. Register your baby’s birth and submit your Baby Bonus application during the same session.
  4. Select your preferred bank. Choose DBS/POSB, OCBC or UOB to open your child’s CDA and CSA.
  5. Receive your first payout. Once your baby’s birth is registered, eligible Baby Bonus payments generally begin within seven to ten working days.

Although every family’s journey into parenthood is different, completing these steps ahead of time can make those first few weeks at home feel just a little less hectic. After all, you will have far more important things to focus on: like getting to know the newest and tiniest member of your family.

Raising a Child Takes a Village And Every Little Bit Helps

No government grant can fully capture the joy, exhaustion, laughter and countless unforgettable moments that come with welcoming a child into the family.

The Baby Bonus isn’t meant to cover every expense, nor does it replace the love, patience and time that every parent pours into raising their little one. What it does provide is meaningful support during a season of life when every helping hand matters.

Whether you’re preparing for your first baby or celebrating the arrival of another little addition to your family, understanding how these schemes work allows you to make informed decisions and take advantage of the support available.

After all, parenting comes with enough surprises. Knowing what help is available shouldn’t be one of them.
