Free Things to Do With Toddlers in Singapore

By Thursday, most parents of a toddler have run out of ideas.

The flat feels smaller than it did on Monday. The weekend is coming, and so is the question that arrives with it: where can we actually take her that won’t cost sixty dollars before we’ve even had lunch?

The good news is that Singapore is unusually generous on this front. Some of the best places for small children here are completely free, and a few of them are better than the paid options. Here are the ones worth knowing about when you need something for this weekend.

Jacob Ballas Children’s Garden

Still the gold standard for free toddler outings. Tucked inside the Singapore Botanic Gardens, it’s built entirely around children under 12, with water play, a treehouse, suspension bridges, sandpits and shaded climbing areas.

The toddler zone is separate from the bigger-kid equipment, which matters enormously when your child is still unsteady on their feet.

Practical notes: Botanic Gardens MRT. Open 8am–7pm, closed Mondays. Go before 10am on a weekend or expect a crowd. Bring a change of clothes, because the water play is not optional as far as any toddler is concerned.

If your child is too small for the bigger water parks, this is the one. The water circulates through shallow channels and gentle tidal patterns rather than the blasting jets that tend to terrify under-threes.

It’s genuinely designed for little ones, and the surrounding gardens are flat and stroller-friendly when you need a break from the splashing.

Practical notes: Lakeside MRT. Bring water shoes — the surfaces get slippery. Shade is limited at midday.

A free wet-and-dry playground inside Gardens by the Bay, with flower-shaped showers, a toddler-specific water zone and a treehouse-themed dry play area for when everyone’s had enough of being soaked.

Practical notes: Open Thursday to Sunday and public holidays, 9am–7pm. It closes for maintenance on weekday mornings, so check before making the trip.

Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park

The sensible parent’s choice. Everything is in one place: playground, water play, open grass, toilets and food within walking distance. For a toddler outing, that proximity is worth more than any single fancy feature.

Practical notes: Bright Hill MRT. Weekday mornings are noticeably calmer than weekends.

A Note on Expectations

One thing worth saying, because nobody says it: toddlers often enjoy the least impressive part of any outing. You will take them to an award-winning playground and they will spend forty minutes crouched over a drain.

Let them. The value of these places isn’t really the equipment. It’s getting out of the house, somewhere green or noisy or new, without spending anything to do it.

That’s usually enough.
